Project Summary / Description:
Adapt plus plans to develop market of locally produced ethanol as a domestic cooking fuel and clean cooking ethanol stoves in Uganda. The goal is to promote ethanol as efficient, clean, safe, and affordable cooking fuel with substantial health, economic, social and environmental benefits. Wood fuels are largely used for cooking in Uganda. High demand for wood fuels used inefficiently results in overuse and depletion of forests. In 2012, 14.1% of Uganda‚ land area was covered with forest. The land available is becoming scarce. Since 1990 the forested area decreased from 49,240 km¬≤ down to 29,880 km¬≤. About 90,000 hectares of forest cover are lost annually, which leads to fuel wood scarcity in the country. We will create a prototype of the ethanol stove and test it with the target market; we shall continue to refine the stove basing on the users‚ feedback. We shall then create manufacturing and operations processes, plans for our marketing launch and testing. At the same time, Adapt plus will work out memoranda of understanding with ethanol producers for distribution rights.
