Project Summary / Description:
The purpose of the project is to maximize resiliency and reduce the impact of climate change by providing improved durable energy saving jikos to both rural and urban households which shall reduce carbon emissions. Jiko is a kiswahili word meaning stove. Carbon reduction can partly be achieved if households use clean energy in cooking and lighting. Our organization make improved metallic energy saving jikos/stoves which can last up to 20 years. Dubbed '3 in one project' the charcoal and wood stove is capable of reducing carbon emissions by 60% considering every household cook at least three times in a day.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The 3 in one improved jiko has brought benefit to women and girls through clean energy for cooking and lighting. Women have achieved equal employment in production and sale of the improved jikos. They save time and money which would otherwise be used for other things. The improved 3 in one jiko lights easily and cooks fast. Independent tests shows it produces over 65% less health damaging CO2.For example with charcoal worth 1 dollar a woman can cook two pots of dry maize. It consumes less charcoal by 60% saving around USD 300 per year. Almost 2/3 of the sales are done through community women groups who provide microloans to assist low income earners to purchase the jiko. Our organization also allows women to purchase on instalments since we are located in the community and they commit to pay as agreed. The project trains artisans in local assembling of the jiko benefiting more than 100 women and youths so far. Other vulnerable community members have benefited through purchase of local materials and allowing them to be retail outlets. The project has facilitated formation of Environmental Youth Groups in 10 Secondary Schools where students and teachers actively participated in Afforestation and Reforestation programs, Environmental conservation and Energy Saving Technologies besides creating awareness on modern methods of Agriculture.
