Project Summary / Description:
1. Objectives of the project 1) to develop a product that replaces open fire cooking with modern, sustainable energy and solves severe health and environmental problems associated with the traditional open fire cooking 2) to develop a product that is designed for local harsh rural conditions in sub-Saharan Africa 3) to develop a business model where CO2 reductions are quantified and connected to voluntary carbon market 4) to develop technological solution that tackles several issues simultaneously including women's and children's unpaid domestic work and lack of time for more productive activities and severe negative health impacts caused by open-fire cooking.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
7. The solar cooker project will help reduce indiscriminate cutting of trees for charcoal production and firewood for cooking and heating. The project has taken an integrated approach encompassing components such as agro-forestry, livestock raring, beekeeping and agriculture production of cash crops such as beans and vegetables. The integration model will help reduce high levels of poverty, achieve access to clean energy, promote sustainable forestry management, food security and livelihood support at household levels. This model is unique as it will accelerate and spur national economic growth and the attainment of the sustainable development goals and the visions 2030 of making Zambia become a middle income and prosperous economy. Beneficiaries will be encouraged to participate in tree plantation activities, practicing sustainable farming methods and forest resources management. The target customer base are the most disadvantaged sections of impoverished populations where cooking is still based on open flame or coal. Although this is primarily the case in rural areas, in some urban areas charcoal is still used and has a direct link to both deforestation and various health hazards in overpopulated centers. The solar cooker allows users to change cooking habits. The solar cooker will alter social norms by changing the role of women. It is women who are traditionally responsible for cooking and firewood harvesting in African communities. Use of the solar cooker, will help reduce the demand for charcoal. This will in turn contribute to a reduction in the rates of deforestation, a reduction in carbon emissions and an increase in carbon sinks and reduced land and forest degradation. There are no foreseen negative impacts of the project. The Project is generally more likely to promote inclusive and equitable development, and a more sustained reduction of climate vulnerability.
