Project Summary / Description:
In Sri Lanka, non-recyclable waste plastic is mismanaged at large ending up in waste dumps unhygienically. PMAC was introduced to Sri Lanka in 2018 as a sustainable and circular solution for non-recyclable waste plastic by converting it into an industrial raw material, Asphalt, with enhanced strength and durability properties as a more durable solution for roads, parking and yard paving. AGC Innovate was formed as a company to disseminate the technology of producing PMAC in collaboration with public and private partners as a technology provider where the manufacturing is carried out according to a curated mix design considering the optimum performance of the mix.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses), Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)
Best Estimate of GHG Avoidance/Reduction of This Project (Tonnes CO2 Equivalent/Year):
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The communities living surrounding the open garbage dumping areas are considered to be highly vulnerable for climate change, Sri Lanka witnessed one such calamity back in 2018 where the Meethotamulla Garbage Dump collapsed taking 18 lives of the nearby communities. Improper waste management has been a greater cause while the majority of these communities are living poverty. With our initiative, we are working in collaboration with the Waste Management Authority (WMA) to empower this community who are making a living out of picking plastics from the garbage dump. Accordingly, the people from these communities are equipped with the basic knowledge on the required plastic collection and they are paid per every plastic kg they collect. In this manner, the community, both males and females get to earn money through the operation by being part of the PMAC manufacturing process and empower their economic status. When it comes to the process of PMAC manufacturing, not only it is carried out as an environmentally friendly initiative, but it is creating a social sustainability platform too. Sri Lanka being a small island nation itself has created a climate vulnerable community where it is highly impacted by industrial giants like India in the region and the climate change is inevitable even though we do not contribute significantly to the climate change impacts. Bringing down the PMAC technology to address the mismanagement of non-recyclable waste plastics will support by creating economic opportunities for the Sri Lankans as a whole.
