Project Summary / Description:
The Alliance was formed in 2014 after acknowledgement from environmental organizations, labor unions, and community of color-led organizations that only by building a broader movement and working together for equitable climate policy would we achieve the transformational changes needed. Leaders from a cross-section of organizations and unions met to discuss their shared values and vision for a equitable and just transition into the clean energy economy, and created the Alliance. The Alliance evolved to run the Yes on 1631 ballot initiative campaign in 2018 and now is advocating for equitable climate policy in the 2019 legislative session and beyond.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy is made up of a broad cross-section of organizations, unions, businesses, and tribes that represent a wide range of WA residents and issues including economic, gender, and climate justice. The Alliance works in partnership with Front and Centered, a statewide coalition of organizations and groups rooted in communities of color and people with lower incomes and the Washington State Labor Council, with more than 600 union locals and councils representing approximately 450,000 rank-and-file union members throughout the State of Washington whose work is dedicated to supporting economic justice for workers and people with lower incomes. In addition, The LGBTQ Allyship and Gender Justice League are supporter organizations of the Alliance and were engaged in the Yes on 1631 campaign. Equity, including economic, environmental, gender, and racial justice is central to the Alliance and the foundation from which we advocate and build intersectional climate policy.

Mission Statement:
The Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy is a coalition of Washington organizations and individuals committed to building our state‚ economy, improving the health of our residents, and leading on the fight against climate change. With more than 200 coalition members including health professionals, businesses, labor unions, faith communities, environmental advocates, tribal nations, and communities of color‚Äîplus thousands of volunteers from all over the state‚Äîthe Alliance is dedicated to building a prosperous and equitable clean energy future. The Alliance believes Washington can both respond to climate change by adopting policies that reduce carbon emissions and hold big emitters accountable, and can invest in communities of color and communities with low incomes disproportionately harmed by climate change.
