Project Summary / Description:
Amal, meaning clean energy, aims to solve the grave crisis of particulate emission via stubble burning by using agro-waste to make smokeless biochar briquettes as a substitute for traditional sources of energy like coal, firewood etc. Amal‚ vision is to empower the millions of farmers who are given no choice but to burn their agro-waste as a way of disposal and to help in the significant reduction in the CO2 emissions caused due to stubble burning and usage of low-grade coal by giving a better alternative to choose. Amal was formed on the idea to help nature sustain itself. The air quality index becomes hard to breathe in the nearby states where the stubble is burnt. So we want to make a difference in our lifestyle by choosing better alternatives to cure this problem.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our project aims to solve a two-fold problem, the first being the increase in the pollution level due to stubble burning and the second underlying problem is the cause of stubble burning. India is known as the land of agriculture; we depend majorly on farming and its produce. When the farming season comes to an end where the crops are harvested and sold in the market, the remaining parts of those harvests aka agricultural waste have no use further on to the farmer. Since they carry no value, the farmers do not have the option to sell them and get an additional income through them. That's why they are forced to burn the waste. Firstly, burning farm waste can cause a high level of carbon emission, as well as the fertility of the land is at stake where they burn it due to its nitrogenous content. This is where Amal plays a crucial part, we buy the farm waste from the farmers at a rate they decide and hence empower the farmers by valuing their stubble and providing a source of income for the same. Moreover, Amal plant only recruits people from a financially weaker section of the society to help them earn an income and by extension help their family to live a life of comfort and opportunities.
