Andando has worked in Senegal and developed a deep connection over the last two decades there. Through first developing friendships and understanding the country on a very personal level, we are in a better position to implement programs that are in line with the true needs of the community that utilize appropriate technology or improve available techniques. This results in sustainable, long-term solutions that develop people and communities on multiple levels; economically, socially, and beyond. We have a growing and dynamic Senegalese staff that is locally trained and educated, and works one-on-one with those participating in our programs. By working collaboratively with our staff and community representatives, our innovative program addresses myriad issues and now has 2,500 direct participants, benefiting well over 10,000 people.

In rural Senegal, many women are dependent on the men for many of their needs and financial security. This project promotes agency among the women by providing them an opportunity to work for themselves, earn an income, and feed their families. This broader market participation promotes dignity, more expansive cooperation, and community engagement. In similar projects in the past, this has not only resulted in increasing household incomes and nutrition, but participants also report higher levels of satisfaction with their lives, their work, and their overall happiness.
