Project Summary / Description:
Our work on Antarctic blue carbon is underpinned by biodiversity conservation and clarifies that nature is more efficient than the technological capacity for carbon capture, and it always has been. This work changes how we look at conservation and climate change mitigation - if we value marine life as blue carbon and other ecosystem services as nature-based solutions to meet decarbonisation targets (see Bax et al., 2020: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/gcb.15392)
Best Estimate of GHG Avoidance/Reduction of This Project (Tonnes CO2 Equivalent/Year):
Sustainable Development Goals:

Clean water and sanitation
Affordable and clean energy
Decent work and economic growth

Reduced inequalities
Sustainable cities and communities
Responsible consumption and production
Climate action

Life on land
Peace and justice
Partnerships for the goals
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our team includes three women in their early career (PhD/post-doc), and NBax has taken on leadership aspects of the project - forming a science policy collaboration in 2017, published in Global Change Biology in 2020. Our team works across 8 institutes and 6 countries, including representation in Peru (Bernabe Moreno). Illustrating diversity with recognition that, if funded into the future our project has capacity to expand networks globally including remote locations such as the Falkland Islands (NBax collaboration), and working on issues specific to coastal communities and blue economy planning (NBax publication pending in 2021, which includes indigenous scholars as co-authors and provides a meaningful analysis of issues specific to nations such as Myanmar and New Zealand).
