Project Summary / Description:
Aspire Food Group Ghana adopted the farming of palm weevil larva in Ghana as a way to address food insecurity, mitigate climate change and malnutrition. The global population is currently predicted to reach 9.7 billion people by the year 2050. Growth will mainly be in developing countries with more than half in Africa. Achieving global food security will be challenging as estimates suggest that food production will need to increase by 70% in order to feed everyone. A major hindrance to meeting this production figure is the effect of climate change on agricultural production. Beef is one of the meat products most consumed worldwide. Cattle are known to contribute more GHGs than other protein products, which are harmful to the environment . According to the FAO, it is predicted that, "in 2050 beef will become so expensive no-one will be able to pay for it . Considering the issues associated with beef, there will be the need to adopt an alternative protein source which is nutritious, natural resource-use efficient, less expensive to farm and contributes less GHGs into the environment. Insects are the most numerous animal species, emit fewer GHGs and is estimated that 80% of the world‚ population eat insects, particularly in the developing world. Aspire is motivated by the positives of insect farming. Aspire through constant research, has developed a technology to farm edible insects easily, enabling mostly rural individuals to produce the insects domestically for consumption. Aspire has piloted the insect farming technology in Central Ghana and with the positive feedback received, plans to scale-up in other administrative regions in Ghana.

Mission Statement:
Our mission is to provide economically challenged, malnourished populations with high protein and micro-nutrient-rich food solutions derived from the supply and development of insects and insect-based products. We seek to address food insecurity by adopting best practices and technologies that are environmentally friendly and contribute less Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) to the environment. We at Aspire refuse to live in a world where food and nutrition insecurity abound and for that matter, have an obligation to do something about it.
