Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
1- Women empowerment: - As women are overwhelmingly the main cook in Cambodia and Bangladesh, they bear the brunt of harmful emissions from cooking, spending long hours in smoky kitchens. Use of firewood kills 3.5 million people every year (most of them being women) - more than traffic accidents. - A key burden for women in last-mile household is time poverty : >Rural Bangladeshi women devote an average of 150 hours per year collecting biomass. In addition, traveling far away to collect wood may pose the risk of physical attacks (Rehfuess, Mehta, and PruÃàss-√ústuÃàn 2006). >Due to inefficient cooking, women spend 4 hours a day on household chores (setting the fire, cooking, cleaning the pots and the ashes from wood fuel‚Ķ) >The resultant lack of time negatively affects the economic options, personal and mental health of women. In view of this, access to time and labour-saving solutions are particularly valuable to them. >The time spent on fuel collection and preparation often translates into lost opportunities for gaining education and increasing income (Blackden and Wodon 2006; Clancy, Skutch, and Batchelor 2003). Globally, cooking with wood costs US$2.4trillion per year - majority of this in lost economic potential of women >The use of biogas is estimated to reduce the daily time of fuel wood collection, cooking and washing up by three hours. ‚áí By improving women‚ health, economic outputs and time management, ATEC biodigesters give them greater agency to create strong lives for themselves. Addressing modern, reliable and sustainable cooking is arguably the highest impact technology intervention for women in last-mile households. 2- Last-mile customers empowerment - Using human-centred design principles, ATEC‚ system was designed with farming communities to address their key issues in accessing this high impact technology. - Our innovation benefits last-mile customers by improving their health (KAP removal), increasing their income and freeing up time to focus on more productive activities. - By using ATEC‚ products, small-scale farmers increase their revenues and decrease their expenses as biodigesters: >Improve crop yield by 5-10% (rice) and 20-32% (fruit and vegetables) through accessing renewable organic fertilizer >Reduce chemical fertilizer costs by 50-100% >Reduce the direct/indirect costs of fuel acquisition (either 20hrs per week to collect and use wood, or average $15/mth for gas). ‚áí Households can increase their income by up to $521 per year.
