Project Summary / Description:
The idea for back2earth originated from a school environmental class project which consisted of finding out how much trash people produced on a weekly basis. After we saw that food waste made up a big percentage of people‚ garbage, we decided to collect organic food waste in our neighborhood and turn it into compost. As the class came to an end, our collection of food waste prevailed. In fact, we began receiving more waste than ever. Thus, we founded back2earth Inc., a non-profit to fight this issue through education, advocacy, and the active production of compost.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
In terms of economic diversity, our second station, in Coconut Grove offers composting services to people of all economic backgrounds. We allow anyone to make that positive impact. With over 30 people dropping their food waste on a weekly basis in the neighborhood and growing. Following our plans, Wynwood will have a drop-off station for its residents which will accommodate the more middle class, mixed-raced populations of the area. Making this service free and easy allows anyone to start composting no matter the race, economic classement, or gender. Our project will help community rethink their waste management. Organic waste represents more than 40% of the weight of each household trash can. We can take care of it, for free! back2earth gives the ability for anyone to help us in healing our environment, we don‚ t classify or categorize but instead, we see any willing contributor as a part of our unifying movement.

Mission Statement:
back2earth focuses on growing gardens not landfills. We are four kids (19, 17, 15, and 13 years of age) - all siblings - working to reduce the amount of food waste that ends up in landfills. We created our first community compost station in 2017. Following its vast success, we then established a nonprofit organization in 2018, in order to maximize the impact we could make on our community in Miami and in Florida.
