Project Summary / Description:
We have developed a low cost plastic solar roof tile for sustainable roofing and clean energy provision for low income households whilst addressing the issues of waste management, housing crisis and energy outcries. Plastic solar roof tiles are ecofriendly roofing materials made by recycling plastic waste and integrating a customized solar panels to serve 28 million households in rural Uganda, who are off grid with limited housing options. Our 1.5sq ft. roof tile are added to be 25tiles totaling up to 50 watts attached with a 6 volts battery storage system in a complete circuit to form a single kit that cost 125 dollars. Approximately 2.5 million tons of plastic waste generated in Uganda annually. As a common practice, these are burnt which emits dangerous greenhouse gasses to our ecosystem. In response to climate change and contributing to circular economy, we embed the principles of rethink, reuse, reduce and regenerate. Our operations are supported by plastic waste collectors operating around 121 landfills. Our vision for growth is to serve 1000 homes with our roofing technology by 2026 through transforming 45 tons of plastic waste into roofing tiles while saving 1200 million tons of carbon emissions.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The absence of an effective public waste collection system in Uganda has led to many informal waste-pickers involved in the collection and segregation of waste. The majority of waste-pickers are from low-income communities and operate in unhygienic working environments. Some are pregnant women, are unaware of safe or sound waste handling practices, undertake manual collection activities that may be dangerous to their health earn low incomes. Biha Eco venture will provide recycling services, creating income opportunities for the marginalized women in Wakiso and Kampala suburbs, reducing environmental and health hazards in places where plastic waste is currently littered due to lack of a functioning solid waste management system. We shall engage women between the ages 18 to 50 in our network of waste pickers who will operate around 180 landfills in underserved communities. This particular group of people will be empowered because they are susceptible with no alternative employment opportunities. They will earn between 20 to 50 dollars monthly doubling their current income statues. With our collection system, sorted plastic will transformed into affordable construction materials to served poor homes in developing communities and rebuilding refuge settlements facing housing crisis.
