Project Summary / Description:

Children grow, bicycles do not. In the Netherlands, more than 4 million bicycles are unused in sheds and municipal depots, while almost 1 million new bicycles are purchased every year. That's why we introduced BikeFlip in June 2020; a subscription to a circular and social children's bicycle, with an exchange and repair service at home. All our bicycles are deliberately second-hand and are upcycled in our workshop, where we let people with a distance to the labor market reintegrate into meaningful work. If the bicycle is too small, we will exchange it at home for a larger size. In this way we reduce the discarded bicycle mountain, we help people find meaningful work and we make children happy with beautiful circular bicycles.

BikeFlip actively offers its services as a solution for social organizations and municipalities that want to stimulate bicycle use among population groups that cycle less (due to poverty or cultural differences), in neighborhoods where the percentage of cyclists is (too) low (such as Utrecht Overvecht). Examples of current projects that we do for this group are with the organizations ‚ De Fietsmeesters‚ and ‚ Stichting Leergeld Utrecht‚ . Together, we stimulate sustainable cycling for, especially, women of color and amongst refugees (we rather use the term ‚ new Dutch citizens‚ ). In 2022 we helped 1500 people on a bicycle via our bike stimulation projects. Also, at our workplace we strive to be as inclusive as possible. Combining young and old and of different cultural backgrounds. In addition, we are creating space for people with a distance to the labor market to help in the workplace and to reintegrate to meaningful work. In 2022 we helped 11 people towards work.
