Project Summary / Description:
Our non-profit organization was established in 2014 when the City and County of Honolulu (and its governmental partners) realized that they could not fully fund a high quality bikeshare system without additional support ($10 million). Additionally the private sector would help "de risk" such a new mobility service type and the non-profit sector would bring community awareness and the donation funding tool to the project. We are the oversight partner of the public private partnership which is Honolulu‚ public bikeshare transit service, a system that has been a top ranked bikeshare system by NACTO since 2017. Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Honolulu has never had a shortage of bicycles (typically there are an estimated 1 bike per 2 cars registered), but few residents used their personal bikes for essential trips before bikeshare due to maintenance problems or low convenience. Our project brings an affordable ($15/ month, <$1/ trip) and conveniently located green transportation adjacent to over 32% of our island's population no matter how wealthy you are. Over 50% of our members are from households meeting or near the ALICE [Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed] definition of needing economic support even while employed. Our service has brought green and affordable mobility to our population as young as 16 years old thus reinforcing - through their daily activities - that there are affordable and climate supportive actions one can take now to help their island and planet. Furthermore, the state of Hawaii has the highest proportion of dependency on foreign fuel, and Russia is one of the largest suppliers of our fuel supplies, which at risk for the near future due to possible embargo.
