Project Summary / Description:
Based on a demand from Shibuyungi –Mumbwa , about 85 kms from Lusaka and Haponi about 60 kms from Mumbwa Town) on a fact finding mission was conducted in February 2017 to assess the possibilities of developing a biogas programme. This mission concluded that the circumstances in these rural areas seem favourable and recommended in depth piloting of construction of 100 biogas plants. Based on a futher study in 2018, a decision for intervention was taken BEZ to assigned two advisors to the programme and a detailed proposal for a domestic programme has been formulated in cooperation with the potential clients and partners. BEZ will strive to improve governance and reduce poverty in these areas, supporting the setup of a biogas programme, aiming to reach 100 households. It will contribute to reaching the SDGs and it fits in with national policies and strategies (promote the use of renewable energy (RE), reduce the consumption of wood energy in the national energy consumption, employment creation, the promotion of private initiative regarding rural and RE) and it opens up future opportunities to tap into Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) funds. The overall objective of the project ) is to establish a sustainable and commercial domestic biogas sector in rural areas resulting in the reduction of biomass resource depletion while providing a significant improvement in the quality of life of the families concerned
