Project Summary / Description:
Egypt emissions for 2016/2017 were 210 million tons, with an increase of 1.8 percent. On the opportunity side, Egypt is the biggest producer of UCO in the region with 2.5 million tons produced annually. Being in the heart of MENA and Africa is a great competitive advantage. BDM produces high quality biodiesel 100% from UCO collected locally as a feedstock. Our product is exported to leading European companies. We started by investing in a technology from U.K., but the amount of waste increased and the type of waste stream started to vary. Thus, we invested heavily in R&D to localize the technology. We created a new department for plant design, project implementation. Over 4 years, our team grew from 4 to 40+.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
BDM is providing jobs and economically empowering women. We are also helping to change the habits of unhealthy disposal of used oil and protecting the environment. To expand collection, we are using more collectors which means more job opportunities. We receive daily around 40 Ton of UCO being collected by more than 1500 Freelance collector work on daily biases with us across all Egypt. We launched our household collection project: We provide home collection for more than 3000 family and we are targeting 1 Million in 5 years. In impoverished slums areas, female-headed households rely heavily on selling their waste for around 40% of the cost of new oil. We spare the country billions that could have been for maintenance of sewage systems as we encourage people to recycle used oil not to through it in pipes.
