Project Summary / Description:
The project is about ''Building the Climate Change Resilience for Local Communities in the Kivu and Tanganyika Lakes Basins''. It aims at reducing at least 10% of the lake and river sedimentation in both basins. Both Lakes are connected through the Rusizi River, and are part of the African Great Lakes Region. This region is characterized by some elevated landscapes, with altitudinal ranges up to 3, 000 meters above sea level. Climate change has been predicted by models, and today, there are on-the ground observed impacts: heavy rainfall during rainy periods, prolonged and hot dry periods. Heavy rainfall, on the steep slopes with bare soils and non-sustainable agriculture, leads to high water run off into the valleys; causing erosion, landslides, flooding and subsequently sedimentation in the rivers and their reservoirs (lakes). Both Rwanda and Burundi are vulnerable to those impacts; given that the capacity to recover or resist to landslides, erosion, flooding and sedimentation is very low. This project intervenes first through a study on identifying the potential sources of river and lake sedimentation, second through stakeholder consultation and the study results, implement the on-the ground climate change resilience interventions on some selected sites - engage and involve local communities throughout the process, and third develop policy briefs that will help the Governments of Rwanda and Burundi to adopt sustainable climate change adaptation strategies in the Kivu and Tanganyika Lakes basins.
