Project Summary / Description:

The project is part of a regional strategy based on ecological mangrove restoration. Project activities are implemented by multidisciplinary groups where local communities, government, and civil society are involved. The field activities and the strategy have existed since 2000, seeking to face historical mangrove deforestation rates and land-use change in the region. In addition, with local stakeholders interested in recovering ecosystem services and increasing their resilience.

The projects is implemented with an ecosystem-based adaptation approach, integrating civil society, academia, government, and the private sector in a multiscale scheme.
This prize seeks to strengthen community-based capacities on ecological restoration and their training for the appropriation of the ecosystem and diversification of activities. The exercise of "Las Chelemeras" will allow the permanence of the results of the restoration and sustainable management of the mangrove once the restoration work finishes. At the same time, the performance monitoring of the site will feedback the evolution of the ecologic, economic, and social dimensions of the project and allow for punctual interventions, if needed.
