Project Summary / Description:
The BSB Hygen Bioenergy Reactor (HBR) pretreats organic material inputs to deliver particle diameters of <50microns. The input materals are also solubilised to offer for continuous input feedstock supply. This increased combination offers for highly efficient consumption by the specialised microgoranisms that exist within the HBR's fermentation chambers. Conversion (solid to biogas) efficiencies reach as high as 90%, with the process water being reused and the residual organics useful for other products (ammonia and fetilser). This project was motivated by the frustrations found with Anaerobic Digestion. The novel "descaling" treatment could help improve the process, however the complete overhaul of the whole project + the "descaling" technology field treatment made much more sense. The plan was recognised by the UK government and in 2015, BSB was awarded £500,000 in funding to develop it further. BSB has since raised another £500,000 to secure its Technical Pilot and (global) patents and is in the process of closing a £1.3mio deal to engage the development of the Commercial Demonstrator. BSB will have 18 months burn with £1.3mio. Currently BSB was received strong signals from Thornton Science Park (where it is based) that it will producer and supply 5MWe of power on site in 2021. BSB is developing projects with the Isle of Man and Isle of Islay that look at the processing of creamery production plant and whisky distillery wastes into biogases for onsite use and grid network distribution.

Mission Statement:
Blue Sky Bio seeks to optimise naturally occurring processes to chemical engineering standards of efficiency to render for (relatively) benign, low CAPEX / OPEX production and processing plant offerings to globalised industry. The utilisation of any (soft) organic material as an input for microbial processing into petrochemical refinery outputs, unlocks access to not only - a vast remit of previously untreatable (and therefore valueless) waste streams; but also - the opportunity to deliver a diversified (green-sourced) product portfolio The key value of BSB is that this novel biorefinery operation is able to deliver (without subsidy) waste-derived products that demonstrate that "going green" can be profitable and therefore should be enough of a market signal to demonstrate to existing global industry that transition is as possible as it is needed.
