For two decades, Blue Ventures has pioneered incentive-based approaches to support locally led mangrove management, harnessing economic incentives for local mangrove stewardship through blue carbon and alternative coastal livelihoods, reducing dependence on unregulated mangrove forests. 

A fundamental objective was to develop ways for mangrove-dependent communities to participate meaningfully in the blue carbon market and benefit from protecting this valuable natural resource.

This project recognises the need for economic diversity. It supports the development of alternative livelihoods in participating communities to improve their resilience and ability to respond to change. 
Women are particularly dependent on mangroves. Many live by exploiting mangroves because they can be reached on foot and can be harvested using basic gear. Women also fulfil multiple roles in mangrove supply chains, such as crab and shrimp aquaculture and charcoal production. Their roles are often overlooked and unpaid. This project aims to tackle gender inequality by empowering women to play a meaningful role in decision making; and by improving their mangrove-based livelihoods which includes holistic support to facilitate their engagement, and bespoke training in leadership skills, public speaking and project roles. This increases employment opportunities for women and enables them to take a greater role in governance.
