Project Summary / Description:
BNF began life as a collection of field researchers, studying the biodiversity of Borneo's little-known tropical peatlands. We were integral in developing the knowledge-base and strategy that led to the creation of the Sebangau National Park in 2004, and have worked to improve its protection and management ever since. But in 2015 massive forest fires burned for three months, ripping through our research site and threatening to destroy everything we had worked for during the past decade. This was a wake-up call, with the realisation that major interventions were needed to save these peatlands, their biodiversity and globally-important carbon store.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
BNF is headquartered in the project location (Central Kalimantan) and has experienced, dedicated teams in place, with a strong local staff base and women in leadership positions throughout. We are proud to promote full and effective participation, equal opportunities, leadership and resource ownership for women. 90% of the global organisation's employee's are Indonesian, including 7 of 9 Program Managers / Coordinators, and 6 of these 9 are female. Throughout our programs there is a strong focus on capacity-building for people from the region, for example through training for land managers and a staff development program for all of our employees including many from deprived backgrounds. We provide research opportunities for graduate students from local universities, an environmental education program that visits schools and after-school clubs for children. Sustainable economic development is prioritised in all activities, for example our community nurseries program provides income for more than 50 families in two target villages, including additional opportunities for women's groups.
