Project Summary / Description:
Carbon180 (formerly Center for Carbon Removal) was launched in 2015 out of a UC Berkeley project to advance carbon removal through science and innovation. Carbontech Labs emerged from a "lean launchpad" innovation process, where we identified a gap in the pipeline for early stage carbontech startups through 150+ interviews with investors, corporates, entrepreneurs, and other experts in carbon removal that this effort would provide the maximum impact for scaling carbon removal strategies today. We have evidence that there are entrepreneurs interested in carbontech AND investors looking to finance businesses -- but we see a gap in get the entrepreneurs to meet the criteria of these investors (and likewise to demonstrate to investors that these companies are ready for scale today).

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our organization's core values include empowering a diverse and inclusive leadership base for the new carbon economy of the future that will sequester more carbon than it emits. For Carbontech Labs, we will live those values by recruiting from historically under-represented communities and striving to have a cohort of teams that reflects these values.

Mission Statement:
Carbon180 is developing a startup accelerator called Carbontech Labs to bring innovations that can turn waste carbon back into valuable products and services from lab to market. We believe that an economy that sequesters more carbon than it emits is essential for bending the Keeling curve downward -- not just arresting its alarming upward trend. We also believe that entrepreneurs that can disrupt how we do business across industry sectors -- including energy, chemicals, building materials, manufacturing, and more -- to build the companies of the future that will capture carbon from the atmosphere. Lastly, we believe that we must start building this economy of the future today, even before we have the carbon policy that will eventually be needed to scale this industry, so we are looking to support entrepreneurs that can go to market now. To bring promising carbontech innovation from lab to market, we have created the world's first accelerator program for carbontech startups. We will 1) recruit teams from universities, companies, and research labs across the US, 2) provide coaching, networks, and finance for these teams, and 3) help team find development space through our network of partner test sites.
