As a non-profit carsharing operator, CarShare Vermont is constantly thinking about how to better serve our community and meet the three closely-linked pieces of our mission: environmental, economic and social health. With the encouragement and support of our members and local partners to pursue this project, electrifying our fleet seems to be a logical next step in our evolution. Through this effort, we hope to show that the future of mobility is both shared and electric.

CarShare Vermont is a woman-led organization serving an economically diverse group of members, many of whom earn low to moderate incomes and collectively benefit from $2.1 million annually in personal transportation cost-savings. We have a special program (MobilityShare) aimed at making carsharing more affordable to people with low incomes, and through a strong focus on social equity, regularly conduct outreach to marginalized communities, including New American families. Our project continues this mission of extending mobility to everyone in our community while also reducing carbon emissions from transportation.

Mission Statement:
The first and only independent non-profit carsharing organization in New England, CarShare Vermont seeks to evolve a sustainable model of providing community-based electric car sharing to a broader group of people in one of the country's smallest cities. While we have been very successful in our traditional car sharing service with high fleetwide fuel efficiency, we hope to deepen our impact by beginning to electrify our fleet and tapping into the 100% renewable energy generated by our progressively-run, publicly-owned utility, Burlington Electric Department (BED). If we can overcome the challenges of low population density, a cold climate, limited EV infrastructure, and a stubborn car culture, CarShare Vermont can lead the way for similarly situated communities across the country toward a carbon-free future.
