Project Summary / Description:
After being part of the Colombian delegation to negotiate The Kyoto Protocol, COP 6- The Hague, Netherlands 2000, we identified the need to establish in Colombia an organization able to research, raise awareness and educate key stakeholders in climate change issues. We took as an example the significant number of NGOs that have an active participation and play an important role making significant contributions within the United Nations forums. The purpose of CEID Colombia, in alliance with key stakeholders in Colombia and as focal point of international organizations is: -To put in place projects and initiatives related with implementation and accomplishment of international treaties, mainly UNFCCC and Paris Agreement. -To Raise awareness and educate key stakeholders (business community, public and private sector, civil society and the academy) on climate change; what it means, its negative impacts, and the role that each one can and has to play, in order to mitigate GHG and develop adaptation action, to deal with the negative effects that humankind is facing. -To act as a focal point in Colombia for international organizations, allowing them to put in place their projects and adapt them to the local context. -To diffuse knowledge by translating into Spanish relevant books and publications on climate change and related topics from international experts. -To research and publish books on climate change to educate key stakeholders and support the academic offer of the Colombian Universities. -To organize congresses, workshops, seminars and courses.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
CEID‚ support for empowering underrepresented groups has been particularly evident in the following strategies adopted by the organization: i) The decision to make all of our yearly climate conferences open to the public free of charge, actively inviting university students, vulnerable communities and minority groups. ii) The widespread distribution of all of our publications at no cost to University students. Recently CEID published four books on circular economy to raise awareness on this issue among young people. Additionally we have supported NGOs that represent communities vulnerable to climate change, including directly reaching indigenous people from the Amazon as part of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network- SDSN, an organization led by Jeffrey Sachs. We organized a side event in Paris in the COP 15-2015, on climate impact in the Amazon region and on a regular basis we share information and organize forums and seminars with the SDSN on this issue. iii) Working with Universities on developing research projects, seminars, workshops, academic programs and publications that have involved hundreds of students in Colombia. We have been working closely and for many years, with large Colombian universities such as: Los Andes University, Rosario University and El Bosque University, among others. We have worked with them in research projects, seminars and workshops, academic programs and publications. This joint effort has allowed higher education institutions to improve their academic offering and to deliver a new generation of highly qualified experts, with a better understanding of climate change issues. Many students, including a great number of women, have worked in CEID Colombia in our internship program as researchers, project leads, international ambassadors, especially in UNFCCC forums. The majority of them nowadays continue working in climate change issues with the private and public sectors, the academy, NGOs and international organizations. Similar work has been developed with the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law, that gathers more than 160 universities and research centers all over the world, working in climate change and environmental issues. With the Academy annually we have participated in the Colloquium, an academic forum organized yearly in different parts of the world, to present research projects and academic papers. We also participated in a task force to develop an academic program in climate change.
