Primary Project Category:
Project Summary / Description:
We wanted a pathway that satisfied three criteria: (1) 30 gigaton/year impact by 2100; (2) IRR over 20%; (3) negative lifecycle CO2 emissions. We iterated through many feedstocks (sunlight, sugar, cellulosic biomass, algae, kelp, MSW, etc.), processes (electrolysis, gasification, digestion, combustion, etc.), and products (methanol, ethanol, hydrogen, hydrocarbons, syngas, ammonia, biochar, electricity, etc.). Many of these have been tried before. For example, biomass combusted into electricity was a fast-growing industry circa 2010, but mostly went bankrupt a few years ago. Ultimately, we found one pathway that fits our criteria: cellulosic biomass thermally gasified to hydrogen.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our headquarters is located in an economic opportunity zone, and with our landlord we are active in the community. This helps support economic revitalization in the area. The bulk of our farming and grass cultivar development is in very rural areas in Louisiana and has the potential to increase their income and inclusion in a green future. Three out of seven of our technical engineering team are women, including a female intern.
