Chemolex company currently runs a project known as eco-energy which supplies clean bio fuel to 600 off-grid households and 200 businesses. The bio fuel is used as a suitable alternative to charcoal and firewood for cooking purposes. The households also use the bio fuel for lighting purposes with the help of specifically designed lighting lamps. Our bio fuel powers different businesses through generators. Eco-energy is an innovation that begun in 2012 when there was serious invasion of water hyacinth in L. Victoria. This was the only hope for the community living around the region since the lake provided fish for sale, food and water for irrigation. Invasion of water hyacinth led to a significant reduction in the economic development in the area as 98% of the resident are fishermen who depends on fishing for daily income. The challenge therefore motivated us to develop noble solutions that could eradicate water hyacinth from the lake. Since the region never had any electricity coverage, residence used kerosene for lighting and firewood and charcoal for cooking. We decided to develop a technology that would produce clean bio fuel from water hyacinth thus solving the challenges that were caused by water hyacinth in the lake and at the same time providing clean energy for cooking, lighting and for business purposes. Our technology is based on bio-conversion of water hyacinth after pretreatment in controlled environment. Our process produces 57.8% of bio fuel from water hyacinth which is the highest ever conversion rate.
We currently provide this bio fuel to 600 households and 200 businesses and at the same time remove more than 800 kg of water hyacinth monthly from the lake.
