Project Summary / Description:
Founded in 2021, the partners listed are working together to replace an area of grass outside of the Mosquito Control headquarters with a native wildflower meadow. This will be a chance for project partners and the public to explore how native plants can be integrated into urban landscapes in order to improve biodiversity, create pollinator habitat, reduce runoff, and develop more sustainable practices for designing and maintaining urban green spaces. The public was invited to take part in the phase 1 planting process in April 2021, and also to take part in observing the growth of the meadow and in helping to maintain the meadow in the months that followed. Throughout the months of April, May, and June, there was an accompanying series of community conversations, science talks, musical performances, and other public programs taking place at the site, each focusing on different aspects of water, soils, plants, mosquitoes, local ecology, environmental stewardship, and resilience.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The neighborhood, which is below sea level, and often overlooked by infrastructure improvements are reasons native gardening technologies can succeed in untapped fields. Our work is always with an eye towards lifting up the voices and experiences of underrepresented people and towards products, programs, and events that are carefully researched, beautifully crafted, and created in collaboration with diverse organizations and individuals. We look to raise awareness and solutions before the next tragedies of climate and equality play out.
