Project Summary / Description:
We launch an alternative currency dedicated to decarbonization. Survcoins (survcoin stands for "survival coin") are emitted as rewards for proven carbon footprint reduction efforts. The purpose of the project, which was launched in August 2017, is to create an ecosystem of carbon-lowering actions and transactions in order to change perceptions with regards to where true value creation lies. The pilot project currently underway in Luxembourg aims to establish proof that the adoption of such alternative currencies can positively impact human behavior towards emitting less greenhouse gasses. It aims to both quantify and stimulate participants' carbon reduction efforts. Earned survcoins can be used to buy goods and services from project partners. Large organizations which redeem survcoins accept that these will be demonetarized and will no longer be tradable (but remain visible as part of the organization's contribution to climate action).

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The survcoin is meant to be a wedge helping people and organizations coping with the scarcity of money to open up decarbonization avenues for themselves. Granted to them as a reward for their footprint reduction efforts, the dedicated currency makes them aware which options available to them are the most effective to lower their lifestyle's carbon content. As a result, the survcoin is bound to empower a wide range of people currently hard to mobilize to undertake climate mitigation efforts, notably among the poor, whom the survcoin can help address their budget woes in a climate-friendly way, or the technophile youths, who ought to be seduced by the gamified nature of earning such climate mitigation coins. More generally, the survcoin, a highly competitive way to mobilize climate goodwill and action compared to methods based on subsidies denominated in conventional money, is meant to enable organizations with limited access to resources to launch climate action incentives schemes which build on people's reactivity to monetary stimuli without having to engage the required amounts in conventional money.
