Project Summary / Description:
ColdHubs, addresses the problem of post-harvest loss in fresh fruits and vegetables which affects 470 million farmers and retailers in developing countries (Rockefeller Foundation; Food Waste and Spoilage Initiative 2014). It is estimated that small farmers and retailers loses 45% of their vegetable harvests, 35% of their fruit harvests and 25% of their income due to lack of cooling induced food spoilage every year. Postharvest losses, especially in Nigeria, are caused by ambient temperature and relative humidity which facilitates fungal and bacteria decay. This major problem is due to the absence of suitable, well designed on-farm, markets post-harvest storage facilities and unreliable electricity supply.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
1) 19 ColdHubs operational, in high potential food production and consumption centers of Nigeria, serving 3,517 smallholder farmers, retailers and wholesalers of fresh fruits, vegetables and other perishable food. 2) The 19 Hubs have saved approximately 20,440 tons of food from spoilage during the year, representing 57 tons of food saved per day. This is 3 tons of food saved per day, per Hub. 3) We have increased the income of 3,517 users by 50%, providing US$60 additional income on the present estimated income of US$60, to a total of US$120 per month 4) We have created 38 new jobs for women, by recruiting and training them as Hub Operators and Market Attendants in each new site. The Hub Operators oversees the loading and unloading of food and collects the user fee, while the Market Managers provides education on the technology and service and on-boards customers daily.
