Project Summary / Description:
Common Seas Indonesia is helping low-income riverside residents in gaining access to affordable reusable diapers made by local women and disabled people, allowing them to earn a stable income. Every day 1.5 million single-use diapers are thrown into the Brantas River in East Java, Indonesia, one of the world's most polluted rivers and the primary water source for 17 megacities and 17 million people. The World Bank discovered that single-use diapers account for 50% of the plastic waste in this river. The government is aware of the single-use diaper waste in the Brantas River. It provides a temporary solution by installing CCTV around the river to catch people who throw single-use diapers into the river. We support the government by providing upstream solutions and educating mothers on the benefits of reusable diapers, such as reducing baby rash, lowering family costs, and preventing millions of diapers from being thrown into rivers.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Common Seas Indonesia manages the Reusable Diapers Project, which focuses on delivering ESG investments to society and the environment, as well as economic benefits to regions. The project's main outreaches are young mothers who have babies between 0 months old to 3 years old, and our main reusable diaper producers are local women and disadvantaged people, whom we trained to produce high-quality reusable diapers. Our main resellers are doctors, midwives, nurses, and village clinic health workers, the majority of whom are women. Our retailers are baby stores run by female entrepreneurs, and the largest female association, NU with over 40 million women as their members in Indonesia, is one of our promoters. Common Seas Indonesia is led by women, Women make up the majority of Common Seas Indonesia's workforce, which is 75% female overall. Women are the driving force behind Common Seas Indonesia.
