Project Summary / Description:
Our purpose is to provide fifty electric bicycles (eBikes) for low-income, essential workers, replacing fossil-fuel vehicles. 70% of trips made in the United States are less than 10 miles long: trips that can be converted to easy eBike trips, saving money for low-income families while adding significant health benefits. Our eBike programs builds a platform for enduring change, with education on bicycle commuting, best routes for bike commuting, and support for eBike maintenance. Averaging 300 days of sunshine, our region is ideal for maximizing the use of eBikes. We will uplift our entire community while cutting our carbon footprint!

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
A top way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is to shift people's modes of transit from cars to bicycles. We refurbish bikes for reuse, we provide free or low-cost bikes to folks who can't otherwise afford them, we educate community members on how to maintain their bikes, and we advocate to all levels of government for safe cycling infrastructure.
Best Estimate of GHG Avoidance/Reduction of This Project (Tonnes CO2 Equivalent/Year):

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
A woman who received a bicycle sent us a note to let us know what the bicycle meant to her: Thank you for the bicycle you gave me. That bike literally saved my life. It allowed me to bring food home for my kids, and it empowered me. I can see the physical changes in my body after riding so many miles, proof that I'm strong and can accomplish what some people might think is impossible. Having the bike not only allowed me to travel more easily, it gave me an outlet for releasing my frustrations. I was so depressed and felt so helpless before. There have been many times when I felt trapped or just depressed, and I would just hop on the bike and ride/cry and let it all out. If I could, I would buy a bike for every woman who feels the way I felt -- trapped and powerless. It's amazing what our bodies can do if only our minds will allow it. I still ride every day. Our established programs reach out to the Hispanic and Latino, Black, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Native American, and LGBTQ community members and welcome them into the bike culture, so prevalent in our town and region. We actively break down the barriers keeping people from participating in bicycle riding, from ownership, care and repair, knowledge and access, to social events. Expansion into the eBike realm broadens our ability to target a larger demographic: those who are drawn to a less-sweaty ride, and the ability to go farther. More important, breaking down the price barrier of eBikes allows us to further specifically target the underrepresented in the climate movement. Placing essential, low-income workers on the forefront of commuting improvements, we are flipping the leadership of the climate movement. The pandemic has highlighted the gross inequities pervasive in our nation. Lifting our marginalized workers by providing these eBikes will allow them to improve their lives. The impact this change will have on their individual lives -- financially, environmentally, and mental-health-wise -- are measurable and significant.
