Project Summary / Description:
At Coreshell, we both come from a background of working in the cleantech industry to bring new ideas to the energy sector by utilizing liquid-phase nanolayer formations to enable next-level technologies. We know how to make nanolayer coatings from our previous work in thin-film solar, electrochromic windows, and polymer membranes ‚ and we want to bring that unique technical ability and industrial experience to Lithium-Ion Batteries. We feel like this is a critical and exciting time to be working on energy storage. By depositing well-formed coatings on the surface of the battery electrodes, we can protect against many of the deleterious effects that occur during the cycling of the battery. These effects include the loss of capacity due to lithium depletion as well as spontaneous flammability due to dendrite formation. The combination of greater initial capacity, longer lifetime and reduced manufacturing costs will enable a 25% reduction in cost/kwh of energy storage. Currently, we are demonstrating our novel coatings on a lab scale to attract interest from strategic partners as well as investors. Once we‚ re ready to start scaling our operations, we have aligned ourselves with companies that know how to build and test batteries in larger formats as well as with toll manufacturers like Eastman-Kodak who can make pilot-scale volumes of our coated batteries. This will allow us to make industrial-format batteries without the capital investment or technical risk associated with building our own manufacturing line.

Mission Statement:
Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs) are currently the most cost-effective and energy-efficient way to enable large-scale energy storage for a majority of grid applications, but they still experience several significant issues. Their limited cost competitiveness relative to fossil-fuel, instability over the lifetime of a 10-20 year energy contract, and risk of flammability are all road blocks to their widespread adoption. Coreshell is working to develop novel liquid-deposited nanolayer coatings for Lithium-Ion Batteries that will prevent the degrading reactions which cause many of the problems LIB‚ face today. Our coating process will make batteries 25% cheaper on a cost/kwh basis and will increase the lifetime and safety of both current and next generation LIB's. At Coreshell, we‚ re devoted to bringing clean energy generation and storage from a fringe application slated for future large-scale adoption to becoming a reality of today‚ mainstream energy landscape. We believe we are uniquely suited to help achieve this goal by developing a technology that will not only be a dramatic improvement in LIB cost and cycle-life, but can also be easily implemented in today‚ battery manufacturing lines ‚ rather than something 10 years down the road.
