Project Summary / Description:
Cultiva is a non-profit organisation that started 20 years ago with students, looking to fight the air pollution in Santiago, planting native trees in the Andes foothills. This was a very successful activity which was then replicated and escalated to form Cultiva which now runs various programs in different regions and whose focus also shifted to nature-based solutions to tackle to climate change. Since 2008, we have worked in Renca but last year with COP25 being in Chile we decided to increase our ambition and planned the biggest reforestation project of Chile 30,000 trees with more than 6,000 participants as part of the global campaign 6D in collaboration with the local community and district and other partners.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
As an organisation, we always aim to promote inclusion and provide opportunities for everyone to participate and for them to work together and share. In the Renca project, 64% of volunteers who signed up where women and 0,5% don‚ t identify with a gender, are binary or trans. The age of the participants was from 7 to 72 years old. Of our volunteers 0,3% declared to have a disability compared to 16,7% of the chilean population this is why this year as well as the second part of the Renca 30 thousand tree reforestation we also have a pilot inclusive reforestation so that the team and volunteer team leaders can learn how to foment greater inclusion in future. In terms of economic diversity, when inviting the school groups to participate in the reforestaci n on the 6th of December, we decided to whilst we should have a majority of state schools who in general have fewer opportunities to carry out events such as these for their students but also we thought it was important for students of partially-funded and private schools have the experience of collaborating with fellow students of diverse backgrounds. In the first part of our project, 69% of the schools were state, 17% partially-funded and 14% private. From all the schools, 30% came from Renca de district where the project is set and very important for them to be actively involved. Also, we choose to do this project in Renca because it is particularly disadvantaged in terms of access to green area with a study of functional green space (within 15 mins walking) by the Adolfo Ibanez University noted that Renca only had 1,09m2 compared to the recommended 9m2 by the WHO. The percentage of multi-dimensional poverty in Renca, 26,2% (Casen, 2017), is also above the national and regional averages. This 30 thousand native trees reforestation project is part of a wider Master Plan for Renca to become a new Metropolitan Park for the northern sector of Santiago impacting more than 1 million people as well as provide new economic opportunities for the local community. Within our organization we also try to provide equal opportunities to the team with the difference between the lowest and highest wages of 8,7 times whilst the average in chilean organizations is 47 times.
