Project Summary / Description:
EcoViva was founded to support a democratic movement for peace, justice and environmental sustainability in the Lower Lempa River Estuary and the nearby Bay of Jiquilisco Biosphere Reserve of El Salvador. Together, we have created a model for grassroots participation in integrated and sustainable community development that may be unparalleled in Central America. We are building a green rural economy, addressing the effects of climate change, and empowering young people with information and education while protecting the largest mangrove forest left in the region.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
EcoViva‚ mission is to promote socio-economic and environmental justice in Central America. Our programs are all geared towards economically disadvantaged populations and include a strong component of gender equality. We aim to improve the food sovereignty and sustainable livelihoods of coastal populations through the conservation of economically and environmentally important mangrove forests. Additionally, we partner with and support the only all-women conservation organization in El Salvador, AMBAS. This project will include the direct participation of AMBAS playing a leadership role in the Mangrove Alliance.
