Project Summary / Description:
Our founder, Noah Davis, conceived of Solar Rollers in 2014 after managing K-12 renewable energy education programs for Solar Energy International and experimenting while teaching thousands of students. Solar Rollers allow student teams to be innovative, novel and experimental with their very own energy system, which happens to be a race car. Davis established a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based on an earned revenue model with the goal of inspiring young people to develop knowledge in the field of energy. Youth have the adaptability, the motivation, and a lifetime of opportunity to make meaningful improvements to energy systems everywhere.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Solar Rollers is inclusive of all high school youth regardless of economic status or gender. We've seen an increase in all-girls teams as our program has scaled to new regions, including both rural and urban areas. We provide scholarships to any team in need of economic assistance, and they often find the experience of finding additional community sponsorship empowering. All students and teams are treated equal within our organization.

Mission Statement:
Solar Rollers deeply engages high school students in optimizing a complete clean energy system. The program challenges student teams to design, build, test and race sophisticated solar-powered radio-controlled cars. The program culminates with regional competitions in cities across the U.S. and the globe where high school students race cooperatively against other area teams. Engaging many different types of learners, Solar Rollers teaches energy management, STEM skills, teamwork, self-confidence and problem solving. Teams are supported with cutting-edge materials kits and extensive online resources.
