Project Summary / Description:
The purpose of the project is to valorise the positive environmental and social impact of our solar kits in order to scale-up our work of electrifying rural Africa. ENGIE Energy Access already has a project registered to the Gold Standard to issue and sell the credits generated by our solar kits in Tanzania. However, this project brought to light the inefficient and unadapted methods from the incumbent standards certifying carbon avoidance of small rural electrification projects like ours. As a result, we started in late 2021 the discussion to collaborate with an innovative and data-driven carbon standard developed specifically for rural electrification projects - CarbonClear. After a first successful pilot which took place early 2022, we started the discussion to scale-up their solution to all our 9 project countries.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)
Best Estimate of GHG Avoidance/Reduction of This Project (Tonnes CO2 Equivalent/Year):
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our project brings some justice to an unfair and cruel situation. While the African continent is marginally responsible for the current climate crisis, it is disproportionately affected by it. Our project ambitions to re-direct a significant portion of the 2 billion USD funding available from the Carbon Market to finance the electrification with solar energy of the 600 million Africans living without access to electricity. These communities are among the most vulnerable on the planet. They have traditionally been left out of the construction of the energy grid, and are forced to rely on polluting and/or expensive energy sources (e.g. kerosene lamps, diesel generators). With societies where women are usually expected to be in charge of the house chores, they are most of the time the most impacted by the toxic and hazardous fumes from these products. As a result, our project creates a virtuous circle by creating a commercial value out of the positive impacts of electrifying with renewable energy rural African communities. This self-reinforcing loop can easily be replicated by other solar kit companies, accelerating even further the development of the access to energy sector.

Mission Statement:
EEA is the the leading mini-grid and off-grid, Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGo) solar energy solutions company in Africa. We strive towards the UN‚ Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) of universal energy access by providing clean energy to the remotest parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. We have already transformed more than 9 million lives in 9 countries, and we aim to impact 20 million by 2025. Our project will certify and issue carbon credits issued from the solar kits distributed in 8 African countries : Benin, Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia and Mozambique.
