Project Summary / Description:
Essata is developing a wired, low voltage power and data network based on a 48VDC power bus and a Controller Area Network Flexible Data (CAN-FD) data bus integrated within the same multi-conductor cable. This network will be a modular, plug and play, room-level network to reduce cable and installation labor and use less expensive hardware to reduce material cost. This network will have a 50-70% lower cost than today‚ solution, creating a commercially viable low voltage power and wired data transfer within the building. By enabling lower cost wired data transfer, this network enables higher security and reliability than wireless data transfer solutions. The novel innovation is the use of CAN in the built environment. CAN is a low cost, proven, and robust communication protocol developed for automotive uses. CAN provides two-way digital communication at an acceptable data rate for building automation applications with high reliability and the security of wired data transfer. Inherent physical limitations have, however, prevented its deployment in a commercial building power and data infrastructure. Essata believes it is possible to overcome these inherent physical limitations and to adapt CAN for the built environment. This in turn will enable the implementation of smart building technologies at dramatically lower cost and risk than today. This project was kicked off in December 2020.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The high cost of today‚ smart building technology often restricts its use to large, well-financed companies. This makes it far more difficult for smaller companies and organizations to invest in environmentally friendly, smart building technology and contribute to greenhouse gas emission reduction. Essata‚ technology will disproportionately server smaller businesses that may otherwise lack the resources to implement environmentally friendly solutions. By reducing the cost and complexity of smart building power and data infrastructure to below that of today‚ unsmart infrastructure, Essata will enable all companies, especially those traditionally underrepresented in the leadership of the climate movement, to participate.
