Project Summary / Description:
On 5 June 2021 the BAQ-Cultiva Tree Planting project began in the Industrial and Port District of Barranquilla. The planting of trees is part of the mission obligation of the EPA Barranquilla Verde, since the trees to be used are the result of the forestry compensation mechanism that is required of users for the forestry permits granted. For this, tree quantification was carried out, with the aim of increasing the tree cover in the neighbourhoods with the lowest percentage of trees, planting fruit and timber trees in the backyards of the houses. In addition to the above, there are plans to intervene in the private areas of educational institutions, business and industrial sites. Within the EPA-Barranquilla Verde, we consider urban trees as essential to respond to the effects of climate change, among others to reduce rainwater runoff, improve air quality, increase biodiversity and regulate temperatures.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The purpose of the Tree Planting is to generate several positive impacts in relation to: -Environment: Significant reduction of emissions, reduction of risks by altering the balance of natural resources. -Social: Health and well-being, reduction of climate-related risks. On the one hand, the priority objective of the urban tree planting project is to green the south-western and south-eastern districts of the city, in the neighbourhoods with the lowest percentage of tree cover. These actions are mainly aimed at the south of the city and concern people who are highly vulnerable to climate change and are subject to numerous natural disasters every year. By approaching these neighbourhoods we aim to understand the different physical and intangible impacts that surround the growth of the urban environment in the sector. The results obtained show the presence of very active environmental hazards, such as streams and landslide areas, the low quality of housing construction, among other factors. The great urban-environmental problems present, generates year after year that the inhabitants of the area lose their material goods due to the overflowing of many streams. On the other hand, BAQ-Cultiva Siembra de Arboles wants to influence the social and environmental determinants of health, i.e. clean air, clean water, sufficient food and safe housing. Faced with the effects of climate change and the global COVID-19 crisis, the project proposes to reduce the cost of direct damage to health, i.e. reducing air pollution and improving infrastructure for traffic (beautification, shading and promotion of pavements), food and energy use.

Mission Statement:
The Environmental Public Establishment (EPA) promotes, guides and regulates the protection of natural resources and environmental sustainability, as a guarantee of the quality of life of citizens in the urban area of Barranquilla. It is a coastal city with an area of 154Km2 and 1,274,250 inhabitants. In Barranquilla there are consequences of climate vulnerability such as the increase of extreme events (droughts, floods, cyclones, sea level rise, extreme temperatures, among others). It is necessary and beneficial for the city to promote and implement a low-carbon and climate-resilient development model, in which biodiversity plays a leading role and measures are implemented to mitigate GHGs and associated risks. In this way, the District hopes to contribute nationally to reach a zero emissions scenario by 2050 and prevent the global average temperature from rising 2°C above pre-industrial levels.
