Project Summary / Description:
In 2016, our Founder Iain Steward was working as an Energy Engineer where he gained exposure into the inner workings and processes of building optimisation. Through this experience, Iain realised a major gap in the energy saving potential caused by the industry-standard methods for the optimisation of water chiller plants which circulate cool water throughout a building. Until recently controls of commercial centralised chilled water plants, were optimised in two ways. 1) A controls engineer/technician installing a generic strategy or using Excel with simple calculations to determine an appropriate strategy. 2) ‚ Black-box optimisation‚ , where a new hardware controller is installed onsite at a significant upfront cost in addition to the existing BMS. Such methodologies left a lot energy saving opportunities behind simply due to the processing and modelling limitations of these approaches. So Iain set out to develop the modelling technology which was the foundation upon which Exergenics the company was founded in August 2019.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Exergenics strives to build and nurture an inclusive work culture that welcomes diversity, and harnesses the unique backgrounds and experiences of our team as an advantage for the climate movement. Our team of 11, comes from 7 different ethnic backgrounds, including 3 women, of which one comes from the climate vulnerable state. In short, we see the climate movement as a mutual cause that could unit people from all walks of life, and we strive to capture the perspectives and abilities of people from as many different racial, ethnic, gender, cultural, or sexual orientation identities to solve the challenges that impact us all. As we grow our team, we are actively building an inclusive culture through two main avenues: Maintaining an objective and inclusive hiring process that provides equal opportunities to all applicants, and minimises the potential impact of unconscious, or systematic biases. The other key avenue is by investing in team bonding activities, giving all team members a say in what they do and how they want to do it.
