Project Summary / Description:
Started by a team of environmental attorneys and renewable energy engineers, Firn was founded because normal people can't invest directly into clean energy projects. For decades, access has been reserved only for the rich and well-connected, like big banks or sovereign wealth funds. By building a platform that efficiently aggregates small dollar investors, and leverages changes in securities law, Firn can unlock trillions of dollars of investment currently sitting on the sideline. Just imagine being able to deploy gigawatts of new clean energy, without waiting for Congress or Joe Manchin to act. Clean energy assets also give individual savers solid returns, without the volatility of the stock market. Historically, solar and wind alone earn returns ranging from 6% to 14%, well above the rates of most savings accounts.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses), Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Historically, lower class households have been locked out of avenues to long-term wealth creation: namely, ownership. This pattern is no different for clean energy. Large holding companies own nearly 90% of utility-grade clean energy assets in the U.S., and most homeowners who can afford to install solar panels are not low income. Firn, however, breaks that cycle. It empowers anyone, even small-dollar savers, to directly own a slice of America's clean energy infrastructure. As a result, they can enjoy a steady stream of dividends and capital appreciation, which can grow over time.
