Project Summary / Description:
The project was founded in 2018, however the funding for the project was received on the 24th August 2021 and the project started same day. Project purpose delivery is by targeting two inter-related sets of challenges. The first is very low levels of household energy access, the second is impact of climate change. Better outcomes can be achieved in each area through scaling of markets for solar PV. Lack of access to reliable energy sources is a major challenge faced daily by people of Adankolo community, the community though connected to the national grid, does not enjoy electricity supply of up to 8hours in a week, From the baseline study conducted by Foosteer it was discovered many businesses, institutions and individuals rely majorly on burning of fossil fuels, like petrol, diesel and kerosene to generate electricity, which releases harmful pollutants into the atmosphere that upset‚ our planet‚ natural balance, leading to an increase in warming. From the baseline, it was recorded that a total of 68.64 tons of carbon dioxide emission is being released into the atmosphere by a single institution in Adankolo community and a total of 113.4 tons of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by 24 households in Adankolo community. It was also recorded that an average of 3.5 liters of kerosene is being consumed per households in a week for lanterns; so for at least 100 households 30.3 tons of carbon dioxide is being released into the atmosphere in a year.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Foosteer Initiative/UNDP GEF-SGP project will effectively sustain participation of mainly low-income populations towards low-carbon development through: Raising awareness for environmentally friendly and sustainable business practices through customer education and community presentations Women empowerment in livelihood and sustainable development. Engaging local population/self-employed entrepreneurs in workshops and training courses for local technicians and marketing agents, likewise acting as multipliers for the use of modern solar technology as a reliable power source. Adding to technical and engineering capacity in target community through the development of a strong pipeline of engagement opportunities for local SMEs. This will have a follow-on effect of stimulating greater interest in renewable electrification as a vocational field to be pursued in employment centers or at various higher institutions of learning. Enabling new business opportunities: craftsmen can expand working hours during the evening, shops can extend their opening hours without using candles or kerosene lamps, and new businesses emerge which could not exist without electricity.
