Project Summary / Description:
The global campaign for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty first launched at the COP25 in Madrid, in late 2019 by a global network of civil society leaders, academics, youth leaders and Indigenous peoples. Since then it has grown rapidly into a global campaign to demand an equitable international framework for managing the phase out of fossil fuels with three key pillars: 1. Non-Proliferation: Prevent the proliferation of coal, oil and gas by ending all new exploration and production 2. A Fair Phase Out: Phase-out existing production of fossil fuels in line with the 1.5C global climate goal 3. A Just Transition: Fast-track real solutions and a just transition for every worker, community and country The initiative combines three streams of work: Research — building the evidence base to support a global transition away from fossil fuels Campaign & Communications — building public support and momentum towards international cooperation on phasing out fossil fuels Political Advocacy — engaging directly with governments and multilateral institutions to build further political support for a transition away from fossil fuels.
