Project Summary / Description:
Younger generations will be the most impacted by the effects of climate change, yet climate change education is not yet universal and the current educational initiatives are not always solution-based. The purpose of the Climate Restoration: Science and Action to Heal Our Planet curriculum is to educate young people about the impact of greenhouse gasses on the climate, and empower them to take active roles in solving the crisis. This six-unit curriculum includes lessons about the science of climate change, the politics of climate action, natural and engineered solutions to climate change, and social justice implications of both climate change and solutions. The first unit of the curriculum was finalized in 2022, and teachers and independent learners are currently piloting the course. Collectively, we expect that by promoting the course with our organizational partners, we will reach 250,000 people in 15 countries within the first year.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The Foundation for Climate Restoration recognizes that traditionally underrepresented and underserved communities are disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis. With the Climate Restoration: Science and Action to Heal Our Planet curriculum, we will educate and empower those left behind in the climate movement. One of the ways we plan to achieve this goal is through representation. F4CR is partnering with Girl Up, a United Nations Foundation initiative positioning girls to be leaders in the movement for gender equality. Girl Up brings the voices of local communities and Indigenous groups into the curriculum. Girl Up experts have determined where in the lesson to include youth voices and testimonies about their activism and experiences combating gender inequity and climate injustice. These testimonies provide learners with concrete, relatable stories to ground the concepts they are learning about. The stories also give voice to people whose perspectives tend to be overlooked, and embed principles of climate justice and equity into the curriculum. Another way that we plan to empower marginalized communities is to provide this curriculum free of charge to the international community. As we continue to grow our reach through new funding, we will have the course translated into several languages, and be able to increase the number of daily users on our online class portal. We also plan to develop a downloadable offline format so that communities without reliable internet access can take advantage of the program.

Mission Statement:
The mission of the Foundation for Climate Restoration (F4CR), a registered 501(c)(3) public charity founded in November 2017, is to catalyze the action needed to restore a safe and healthy climate by 2050. Our work centers specifically on education and advocacy around the concept of climate restoration, which focuses on removing historic carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere in order to restore healthy conditions to our planet. Climate restoration goes beyond traditional climate action, which concentrates exclusively on reducing the amount of carbon currently being emitted, but does not address the nearly trillion tons of excess CO2 already emitted and accumulating in our atmosphere. F4CR is based in the United States, but has a growing international presence, with local advocacy chapters in nineteen countries on four continents.
