Project Summary / Description:
The project purposes a Green Africa Villages Model. The project targets individuals and groups engaged/interested in renewable energy, tree production, apiculture and community capacity building. The goal of the project is to enhance community resilience to livelihoods and environmental conservation through the adoption of the Green Villages Model. The objective of the project is to enhance economic development, reduce carbon emissions, improve community's livelihoods and conserve the environment through sustainable use of energy by the adoption of renewable energy and tree production. The background of the project was Kenya is a country of 47 million people with a growing population of the youth (60% are under 25 years old). It is considered as one of the fastest growing populations in Sub-Saharan Africa; expected to reach 70 million by 2030. Kenya has the largest and most diverse economy in East Africa, with an annual growth rate of over 5% for nearly a decade. In terms of Human Development Index Kenya ranks highest in the region. Its entrepreneurship and human capital gives its huge potential for further growth, job creation and poverty reduction. Kenya like many other developing countries, is increasingly faces with economic and environmental challenges such as increased green house gas emissions, poverty, climate change, inequality, and vulnerability of the economy to internal and external shocks. These led to a drive towards promoting green growth strategies to accelerate the progress towards sustainable development, green house gases emissions reduction and poverty reduction. The project was founded in April 30th 2020.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
This project is being implemented in the climate vulnerable counties of Kitui, Makakueni, Kajiado and Machakos hence impacting and changing lives of the vulnerable communities and we look forward towards expanding and working with more vulnerable communities in other regions. The contribution of women and youth in economic activities in Kenya is limited and as such a high percentage of human capital not put into use. To cater for individual / family needs women and youth in this regions involve themselves in small scale agriculture or entrepreneurial activities. However, challenges such as climate change due to high carbon emissions, land ownership, low capacity and middle men blocking the markets. This project provides technical support knowledge and skills to the youth and women, empowering them in their day to day activities. During capacity building sessions of the locals using community meetings and baraza's the women groups are taught the importance of adopting renewable energy, establishing and setting up of the renewable energy sources and products like solar, provided for them at a subsidized price and given directions on where to purchase them. The youth are trained as masons to come up with the energy saving jikos and sell them to the community members hence youth empowerment and reduced carbon missions. In tree production both the women, youth, children, men and the elderly are involved in the process of nursery establishment, education and awareness creation on the importance of tree growing and the process of tree planting so that they can all as a community take care of the trees and nurture them to maturity. Through this sustainable livelihoods are achieved, trees act as carbon sinks and carbon emissions are reduces hence climate change mitigation achieved.
