Project Summary / Description:
We are rendering coal-powered blast furnaces obsolete by creating new laser furnaces that can provide clean industrial heat for iron and steelmaking. Our Green Steel Printing technology directly manufactures iron and steel objects from iron-oxide powder and green hydrogen gas, without emitting any carbon dioxide. Directed laser heating drives both the iron-oxide to iron reaction and metal deposition into a desired geometry, vertically integrating green ironmaking with additive manufacturing. When scaled up, our laser furnace will also provide green steel beams and sheets for traditional manufacturing. Green Steel Printing was envisioned in 2020 during the Cofounders PhD programs in Materials Science and Engineering. After winning UC San Diego's Triton Innovation Challenge and the University of California wide Big Ideas Contests, Green Steel Printing was incorporated as a company on October 12, 2021 to make fossil-free steel a reality as fast as possible.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our project empowers builders to create green steel products and infrastructure without any hidden carbon dioxide emissions far up the supply chain. Our 3D printing process allows manufacturers to subvert the major steel companies that rely on coal burning blast furnaces. Traditionally underrepresented leaders want to envision and build more resilient buildings and communities, which will require steel. Our new 3D printing technology provides them with new tools to build a brighter future with strong steel foundations without emitting carbon dioxide.
