The purpose of the project is to host an International Climate Action Challenge annually. The challenge is a proven approach for empowering communities to identify community and environmental initiatives and go from passion to action in 90 days.

In 2020, we offered the challenge, book, and workbook at no cost to all participants to remove any barriers from underrepresented communities. This worked! We had mentors and challengers from Nigeria, Bangladesh, Columbia, Mexico, Philippines, Uganda, Zambia and beyond. We also had several youth teams participating including those working on getting adults to vote in the presidential election, and climate action teams at high schools in Columbia and USA. The Drawdown Alberta team, launched as part of the challenge, is working with indigenous leaders to lead workshops and next steps. We are applying for grant funds from many sources this year and working directly with BIPOC and youth leaders to create a Wisdom Council. This would formalize the advocacy work we have already been doing, featuring BIPOC and youth leaders in the annual Earth Week Summit, podcasts, and challenge. Our goal is to fundraise to provide an honorarium for our BIPOC and youth leaders to serve as mentors for activities offered through the Green Team Academy. Many participants commented on how our efforts were a breath of fresh air, because of the inclusivity and diversity in our weekly live sessions, in the portal and in our WhatsApp group (which we created to increase accessibility for our African participants)
