Project Summary / Description:
Griya Luhu was established in 2017 and located in Gianyar. The urgency of overcapacity landfill area leads us to forming an eco-preneur based organization to educate, train, and raise people's awareness of the importance of waste management from the source. By time, we have succeeded in opening more than 400 waste bank units that operate around Bali with nett worth Rp 7.000.000 per month. Three main projects of Griya Luhu are located in Gianyar, Tabanan, and Buleleng. Every month, we reduce more than 20 tons of plastic waste and sell them to recycling industries. To support our waste bank development, we are in collaboration with The Government of Gianyar Regency, waste aggregators, and other non-profit organizations as our partner. We are expecting our business growth to create more waste bank units in Java and Sulawesi, more collecting points, and build a refill station.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Our project reduce green house gases by limiting plastic production. The recycling activity successfully reduce plastic production activity that generates CO2 in the process. The plastic production cycle generates CO2 and green house gases that contribue to climate change. The action of waste seggregation helps the community to reduce the green house gases from plastic production.
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Griya Luhu encourages young people and women to be more aware of waste management. 60% of our kader (waste bank manager) are housewives. We believe that housewives take a big control in managing their household, especially in waste management. To support the education sector, we provide training sessions on how to operate our digital system. In result, we successfully trained our kader (mostly 40-50 years old) to be more aware, agile, and ready to face the digitalization in waste management. On the other hand, 60% of our workers in the warehouse are women. We believe that there always is gender equality in every sector, especially in waste management. The enthusiasm of the housewives are shown by their consistent contribution and the increased number of waste bank customers by time. More customers mean more waste is being correctly managed and reduce the waste disposal to landfill. The waste reduction in landfill will affect the number of greenhouse gasses that are being delivered to our environment. The existence of waste banks indirectly gives an impact to the climate change problem in Gianyar.
