Project Summary / Description:
We advocate for the Earth to create a culture that generates nature-based opportunities that incentivize the adoption of regenerative tools for multiple actors at all levels in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. A broad alliance has adapted international protocols to place an economic value on natural capital. Through natural regeneration, project partners are creating carbon sinks and hydrological capture in forests for the financial gain of rural forest landowners. The State of Quer taro is leading the adoption of these tools in other states.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve has been called the natural protected area with the most participation on the planet. The territory is 97% privately owned by the 638 communities who live in extreme poverty. The patrimony of Mexico is in their hands. GESG has had the goal since 1987 of participatory conservation, putting into practice the concept of the Man and Biosphere Reserve. This is accomplished through community education in schools, training teachers, supporting young environmental leaders, diversifying local economic activity, strengthening microenterprises for the long term with infrastructure and equipment, and generating innovative economic values for forest environmental services and scenic beauty. The vulnerable communities that live in the territory are the primary stakeholders of our organization, helping them is our mission, and helping women achieve gender equity through providing empowerment to groups of women gives us our greatest sense of achievement.
