Project Summary / Description:
The death of a family of four due to fumes from their petrol generator. This sad incidence birthed Havenhill Synergy Limited. About 90 million Nigerians live without access to electricity; the majority are in rural communities. The current generation capacity of the national grid cannot serve the energy demands of the country. Therefore, people rely on kerosene lanterns and petrol generators to serve their energy needs. In order to curb this looming menace, Havenhill deploys smart solar-powered mini-grids as a sustainable solution to poor energy access in unserved communities.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
We supply and distribute clean, affordable and reliable energy to rural communities without access to energy. In these communities, economic activities have increased. Existing businesses such as barbing salons, milling shops, Viewing centers, Provision stores, Pharmaceutical stores, have experienced an increase in their revenue as a result of the electricity provided by the mini grids we deployed. They spend less on energy and invest the savings back into their businesses. Also, new businesses such as business centres, phone charging, more grocery stores, are springing up as a result of the reliable clean energy and generating some form of employment in the communities. Havenhill also gives out micro loans to new and existing businesses, paying special attention to female entrepreneurs. We also give a 10% discount to female-led businesses and households, reflective on their tariffs. Our mini‚Äêgrids significantly reduce women‚ drudgery and save them time, particularly in food processing activities through the uptake of electrical appliances like refrigerators and the milling shops available in the communities. The provision of lighting in their homes further amplifies time savings through increased efficiency and added flexibility in the scheduling of household tasks. Also, the children have longer hours of study, contributing to better educational outcomes. Public lighting has also helped to increase safety, which is particularly important for the socio‚Äêphysical mobility of women and girls. Furthermore, over 6 clinics have been electrified for lighting and refrigeration of medications and this has made a significant impact on maternal and child health. In total, we have about 8000 indirect beneficiaries across four sites and 60% are women and girls.
