Project Summary / Description:
The purpose of the project is to replace the use traditional biomass wood, dung cakes for cooking and illumination in rural areas of Rajasthan which produce harmful emissions causing health hazards, while harming the environment and quality of life. Women, who do most of the cooking in the rural villages, are highly vulnerable to the toxic fumes in the kitchen and frequently suffer from bouts of respiratory and ocular illnesses. Biogas is a clean energy source and highly relevant in the larger context of climate change. It not only help in reduction of greenhouse gasses but also utilizes the agricultural wastes as raw material which otherwise is major source of land, air and water pollution. HPPI after observing these issues in the rural areas has been implementing the biogas project for 10 years in various blocks/districts with 1200+ biogas plants constructed in Rajasthan.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The project empowers the farmers with sustainable farm practices which lead to increased crop productivity, the longevity of the animals, bio-slurry generated from the biogas plant, farmers are trained to establish vermicompost units, further providing those with more organic manure that will help them exponentially increase the produce under organic farming. The biogas plant also reduces the amount of food waste and other organic materials being sent to landfills. Biogas is a carbon-neutral energy source that reduces methane emission (a greenhouse gas), and its maintenance is easy and low cost.
